McAfee GetClean
McAfee® GetClean is an initiative to collect and upload clean files from software vendors and
customers. Samples and their meta data are uploaded to McAfee using a client end tool that
customers can deploy to submit information on their clean file repositories. Post processing,
McAfee Global Threat Intelligence™ database is populated with information about the submitted
files and the files become part of McAfee test systems where they are scanned before release of any
new DAT update.
How the program works
The McAfee GetClean program will incorporate participating customer’s and partner’s files into our
test environment. Each day, in parallel with our anti-malware DAT update QA process, we will also
test each new DAT update against participating customers’ data.
The test will include both “On Access” (upon file access attempt) and “On Demand” (upon user
request) scans of each machine using the latest released version of McAfee® VirusScan® Enterprise
software.
Before every DAT release, we will review the results of the tests to identify false positive detections.
Any identification will be submitted to McAfee Labs™ researchers for further analysis. The McAfee
Labs Research team will have final sign-off authority and ultimate responsibility for a high-quality,
error-free update.
For participating customers, the McAfee GetClean program significantly reduces the chances of a
false positive from McAfee® GTI File Reputation technology on a customer’s laptop and server
“master” images and offers an extra degree of protection against DAT based falses.
Benefits of using GetClean
GetClean leverages McAfee Global Threat Intelligence (McAfee GTI) for File Reputation lookup so
that only files that are unknown to McAfee or falsely classified are reported.
This considerably reduces the cost and complexity of submitting clean files to McAfee as the tool
simplifies the entire process, saving time and network bandwidth. Instead of submitting entire COE
images, customers can run McAfee GetClean on their COE image files or known clean software
repositories.

Features
• Delivered as a single Windows executable file with no installation required
• Ability to ADD/ BROWSE /REMOVE custom directories to scan
• Option to run in different modes – GUI, command Line and managed by the McAfee® ePolicy
Orchestrator® platform
• Submit samples or meta data of the files to McAfee Labs for whitelisting
• Auto-populates proxy and email address details if set if present
• Supports GTI File Reputation lookups via McAfee GTI proxy
Customer participation guidance
• McAfee GetClean is not available to general public for download and is provided to
Platinum Support accounts via the Grant ID site.
• GetClean should ONLY be run on the master COE image(s) that IT uses to re-image
machines or on clean software repositories. If the GetClean tool is executed on an end user
machine, even if that system was originally built from a COE image but then user(s) were
allowed to download and install software themselves, the data is no longer of high trust.
• GetClean 1.x submits only Windows executable file types. (EXE, DLL, PIF, SCR and SYS). Data
or document files are not harvested.
• GetClean should be re-run on a regular or scheduled basis on customer systems to capture
the latest file and software updates. Volume of files submitted will reduce significantly in
repeat runs as only newly introduced files get submitted.
